SBOTOP: Folarin Balogun Urges Calm as USA Advance to the 2026 World Cup Round of 32

The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) has officially secured its place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, joining fellow host nation Mexico among the early qualifiers for the Round of 32.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side continued their impressive start to the tournament with a convincing 2-0 victory over Australia in their second Group B match on Saturday, June 20. The win followed a dominant 4-1 triumph over Paraguay in the opening game, giving the Americans a perfect six points from two matches.

Playing in front of a passionate home crowd at Lumen Field in Seattle, the USMNT delivered another composed and disciplined performance, further strengthening belief that they could become one of the tournament’s surprise contenders.

Goals from an Australian own goal and defender Alex Freeman were enough to secure all three points and guarantee progression to the next round with a game to spare.

Fast Start Puts USA in Complete Control

The United States wasted little time asserting themselves against Australia.

Just 11 minutes into the match, the hosts took the lead after a dangerous low cross from Folarin Balogun forced Australian defender Cameron Burgess into a costly mistake. Attempting to clear the ball, Burgess inadvertently diverted it into his own net, giving the Americans an early advantage.

The goal immediately shifted momentum in favor of Pochettino’s team, who controlled possession and dictated the tempo throughout much of the first half.

The USMNT doubled its lead shortly before halftime when Alex Freeman reacted quickest to a deflected ball inside the penalty area. The defender rose well and guided a precise header into the net in the 43rd minute, sending the home supporters into celebration.

At 2-0, the United States entered the break firmly in command and never looked in serious danger of surrendering their advantage.

USA Top Group B and Advance to the Round of 32

The victory leaves the United States at the top of Group B with six points from two matches, ensuring qualification for the knockout phase regardless of the outcome of their final group game.

Beyond the result, the performance once again highlighted the team’s growing maturity under Pochettino.

The Americans controlled 62 percent of possession and registered 10 shots during the contest. While only two efforts were on target, both resulted in goals—a reflection of the team’s efficiency in front of goal.

With qualification secured, attention can now turn toward finishing the group stage strongly and building momentum for the challenges ahead.

Folarin Balogun: Stay Humble and Keep Moving Forward

Despite the excitement surrounding qualification, striker Folarin Balogun emphasized the importance of staying focused and avoiding complacency.

The Monaco forward believes the United States succeeded because they maintained the same approach that produced a dominant victory over Paraguay in their opening match.

According to Balogun, the team’s intensity and desire to start matches aggressively have become key components of their success.

“We wanted to begin the game quickly, just like we did against Paraguay, and that made things much easier for us,” Balogun said after the match.

“Being able to repay the support of the fans on the biggest stage in football means a lot to me.”

While many supporters are beginning to dream about a deep World Cup run, Balogun insists the squad remains grounded.

“Now we’ll rest and recover. We still want to win our next game against Turkey.”

“The most important thing is that we stay humble. If we continue with this mentality, I believe we can achieve good things in every match.”

His comments reflect the growing maturity within a young American squad that appears determined not to get carried away by early success.

Mauricio Pochettino Delighted With Team’s Progress

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino also expressed satisfaction with another impressive display from his players.

The Argentine manager praised the team’s work ethic, especially considering the continued absence of star winger Christian Pulisic, who remains sidelined through injury.

Rather than relying on individual brilliance, Pochettino highlighted the collective effort that has driven the United States through the opening stages of the tournament.

“I thought it was a fantastic match, especially the first half,” Pochettino explained.

“We dominated large portions of the game, and that’s something I’m very pleased with.”

The former Tottenham and Chelsea manager admitted he had expected Australia to provide a stern challenge after the group-stage draw was made last December.

“We always knew Australia would be difficult opponents. That’s why I’m proud of how the players approached the match.”

Pochettino also stressed that success at the World Cup requires contributions from the entire squad.

“It would have been impossible to risk Pulisic when he is not fully fit. This result proves that if you want to win at this level, you need every player to work hard for the team.”

Australia Struggle to Match the Hosts

On the other side, Australia head coach Tony Popovic openly acknowledged that his team was second best throughout much of the contest.

The Socceroos struggled to cope with the intensity, speed, and physicality displayed by the United States, particularly during the opening 45 minutes.

“I’m not sure if it was the atmosphere or something else, but we looked sluggish,” Popovic admitted.

“Our legs felt heavy. They were quicker, stronger, and won almost every duel and second ball.”

According to Popovic, those factors made it nearly impossible for Australia to establish any rhythm in the game.

“When a team dominates those aspects, it’s very difficult to build momentum. Then we conceded two goals that were avoidable.”

Despite the disappointing result, the Australian manager found positives in his team’s response after halftime.

“I thought our reaction in the second half was excellent. Playing against the host nation in front of a crowd like this isn’t easy.”

“The players showed character and demonstrated their quality after the break.”

Momentum Building for the USMNT

With two wins from two matches and qualification already secured, confidence is growing around the United States camp.

The team’s defensive organization, tactical discipline, and ability to capitalize on opportunities have made them one of the most impressive sides of the tournament’s opening phase.

Most importantly, however, the players are refusing to get ahead of themselves.

As Balogun made clear, the objective now is not just to qualify but to continue improving and carry that momentum into the knockout rounds.

The United States will conclude its Group B campaign against Turkey, aiming to maintain its perfect record before turning its attention to the Round of 32.

For now, the USMNT can celebrate another important milestone—but they remain determined to keep their feet firmly on the ground as the 2026 World Cup journey continues.
