Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of the United States national football team, has expressed a bold claim regarding the Premier League title of the 2016/2017 season, which was controversially won by Chelsea. During that season, Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur finished in second place, trailing Chelsea, who was guided by coach Antonio Conte, by seven points. However, recent sanctions imposed on Chelsea for violations of competition rules between 2011 and 2018 have prompted Pochettino to call for a significant reconsideration of that title.
Context of Chelsea’s Sanctions
In March, the Premier League issued a hefty fine of £10.75 million to Chelsea and enforced a nine-month transfer ban on their academy due to undisclosed payments involving third parties to players and unregistered agents. These violations led the league to conclude that Chelsea had not reported numerous financial transactions, even though the governing body determined that Chelsea wouldn’t have breached any financial rules if those payments had been recorded historically.
Pochettino argues that the circumstances surrounding Chelsea’s violations create an uneven playing field between the two clubs. He firmly believes that Tottenham, having finished as runners-up, should be awarded the Premier League title considering Chelsea’s infractions. “We should have won a trophy, the Premier League title. We should have been given that title,” he said emphatically. “They have been punished and have acknowledged their wrongdoing, so why not award the title to the second-placed team?”
Pochettino’s Perspective on Fair Competition
Pochettino’s assertion underlines the broader issue of maintaining fairness within football. He acknowledged Chelsea’s capability to score and win matches during the 2016/2017 season but insists that the integrity of the competition was compromised due to the discrepancies in regulations being followed. “It’s true that we did not compete under the same set of rules. Yes, they scored and won matches, but it is fair to say we did not start on an even footing at the start of that season,” he reiterated.
The former Tottenham manager further posited that had the same rules applied to all teams, Spurs might have improved their squad through key signings that could have propelled them to victory. “It is possible that with equal rules, we could have attracted players who would enhance the team or boost our goal tally. I’m not complaining; this is just reality. If they accept they breached the rules, the Premier League title should rightfully belong to the second-best team,” Pochettino concluded.
Pochettino’s comments might agitate Chelsea supporters, but he maintains that he is merely stating facts that stem from the current situation. He conveyed a sense of fairness, stressing that if the positions were reversed, he would adopt the same stance regarding any potential violations by Tottenham. “I’m not afraid to speak the truth. Chelsea fans might be angry with me for saying this, but if we were in the same position at Tottenham, I would uphold the same perspective,” he emphasized. This position reflects a commitment to integrity within the sport.
