Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion to sign Carlos Baleba in a deal worth up to £70 million, bringing the Cameroon international one step closer to completing a move to Old Trafford.
According to the BBC, Manchester United have agreed to pay £65 million as an initial transfer fee, with a further £5 million available in performance-related add-ons. Brighton have also managed to include a sell-on clause as part of the agreement, potentially allowing the Seagulls to benefit from any future transfer involving the midfielder.
Baleba has emerged as one of Manchester United’s main midfield targets after the club decided that further reinforcements were needed in that area of the squad.
The Red Devils had already strengthened their midfield this summer by bringing in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. However, manager Michael Carrick is believed to have wanted another player capable of adding physicality, energy and defensive strength to his midfield options.
If the transfer is completed as expected, Manchester United’s total spending during the summer transfer window will rise to approximately £153 million.
Baleba is expected to become an important part of Carrick’s plans as United look to build a stronger and more athletic midfield ahead of the new campaign.
Manchester United Reach Agreement with Brighton
Negotiations between Manchester United and Brighton reportedly accelerated significantly on Friday evening, with both clubs eventually reaching an agreement over Baleba’s transfer.
The breakthrough means the 22-year-old midfielder can now proceed with the next stage of the move, including a medical examination with Manchester United over the weekend.
Baleba joined Brighton from French club Lille in 2023 and has since developed into one of the Premier League side’s most highly regarded midfielders.
His performances have attracted attention from several major clubs, but Manchester United have now moved into pole position and appear ready to complete the deal.
There is, however, a fitness concern surrounding the midfielder. Baleba is currently sidelined after suffering an ankle injury during Brighton’s pre-season training camp in Austria.
Manchester United will therefore be expected to carefully assess his condition during the medical process before the transfer is officially completed.
Baleba Adds More Power to Carrick’s Midfield
Manchester United’s decision to pursue Baleba reflects their desire to increase the physical and athletic qualities of their midfield.
The Cameroon international is known for his strength, ball-winning ability, mobility and willingness to cover large areas of the pitch. Those qualities could make him a valuable addition to Carrick’s tactical plans.
His arrival would also give the Manchester United manager greater flexibility when selecting his midfield combinations.
With Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans already arriving this summer, Baleba would become another major addition to a midfield that has undergone significant changes.
United still have Kobbie Mainoo as another option, while the club continues to assess the overall balance of the squad.
Baleba’s versatility could also become useful beyond his natural midfield position.
Baleba Could Provide an Emergency Option at Left-Back
One interesting aspect of Baleba’s profile is his ability to operate in different positions.
Although primarily a left-footed midfielder, the Cameroon international has occasionally been deployed at left-back during his career.
That versatility could prove useful for Manchester United, who still have concerns regarding their depth at left-back.
The club must decide whether to recruit another player capable of challenging Luke Shaw or whether to rely on existing squad members to provide cover.
Right-backs Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have both previously been used on the left side of the defence when necessary.
Baleba would not necessarily be viewed as a direct replacement for a specialist left-back, but his ability to operate in multiple positions could provide Carrick with another tactical solution during a demanding season.
Manchester United Continue Major Summer Spending
The agreement for Baleba represents another significant investment from Manchester United.
The initial fee is reportedly worth £65 million, while the total package could rise to £70 million if all performance-related bonuses are achieved.
Although the fee is substantial, it represents an improvement compared with Brighton’s previous valuation of the player.
Manchester United had been interested in Baleba for some time, but negotiations became particularly complicated when Brighton demanded a high transfer fee.
The latest agreement appears to have finally broken the deadlock, with both clubs now preparing for the final stages of the transfer.
Brighton have also protected their future interests by securing a sell-on clause, meaning the Premier League club could receive additional financial benefits if Baleba is sold by Manchester United at a later date.
Baleba Transfer Could Take United Spending to £153m
Once Baleba’s transfer is officially completed, Manchester United’s summer expenditure will reportedly reach around £153 million.
That figure highlights the scale of the rebuilding project underway at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick.
The club have already made several moves in the transfer market, but the addition of Baleba could be one of the most significant because of the specific qualities he brings to the team.
Manchester United have been looking to create a midfield capable of competing physically and technically across a demanding season. Baleba’s profile fits that objective, particularly given his ability to win possession, carry the ball forward and provide defensive cover.
The transfer also follows a period of uncertainty in United’s midfield.
With Casemiro’s contract having expired, the club needed to find additional options. Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte had been expected to potentially leave Old Trafford this summer, only for those plans to be complicated by a serious knee injury suffered while representing Uruguay at the World Cup.
As a result, strengthening the midfield became an important priority for Carrick.
Carlos Baleba Set for New Challenge at Old Trafford
If the medical examination is successfully completed, Baleba will become the latest major signing in Manchester United’s summer recruitment campaign.
The midfielder is now expected to begin the next chapter of his career at Old Trafford after making a name for himself in the Premier League with Brighton.
For Carrick, the arrival of Baleba could provide an ideal combination of youth, energy and physical presence. At just 22 years old, he also has considerable room for further development.
Manchester United will hope that the Cameroon international can quickly adapt to the expectations that come with playing for one of England’s biggest clubs.
With Tielemans offering creativity and passing quality, Santos providing youth and technical ability, and Baleba bringing greater physicality and defensive intensity, Carrick could soon have a significantly more balanced midfield at his disposal.
The proposed £70 million Carlos Baleba transfer therefore represents more than another expensive signing for Manchester United. It is part of a wider attempt to reshape the squad and build a midfield capable of competing at the highest level.
For now, the final hurdle is the medical process. If everything goes according to plan, Baleba will soon be officially confirmed as a Manchester United player, completing another major piece of Carrick’s summer rebuild.
