Leny Yoro, the promising young defender at Manchester United, finds himself in an increasingly challenging position as competition for places in the squad intensifies. Despite having three years left on his contract at Old Trafford, rumors suggest that his future is not as secure as one might think.
Yoro joined Manchester United from Lille in July 2024 with an initial transfer fee of €62 million, which could rise to €70 million based on performance-related clauses. Entering United at just 18 years old, he was heralded as one of the world’s standout young defenders. However, as the 20-year-old continues to mature, his performance on the pitch has shown inconsistency, especially over the past year.
Recent Form and Rising Competition
Last season, Yoro appeared in 32 Premier League matches, starting in 18 of those, including six under manager Michael Carrick. This season, however, he has seen his role diminish. With Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez firmly ahead of him in the pecking order, he’s managed just two starts and two substitute appearances across all competitions.

One name that has frequently been linked with Manchester United is Jarrad Branthwaite. The club has reportedly renewed interest in the Everton defender, but his price tag of around £80 million, combined with potential competition from top clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City, makes any potential transfer a challenging prospect.
In addition to Branthwaite, Manchester United is monitoring Tiago Gabriel from Lecce and Finn Jeltsch who plays for Stuttgart. Both players are viewed as more cost-effective alternatives to the Everton man, signaling a proactive approach to strengthening the defensive line.
Amid these new developments and the spotlight on potential reinforcements, manager Michael Carrick has maintained his support for Yoro. Following a disappointing performance in the EFL Cup against Brighton, where Manchester United suffered a 2-3 defeat, Carrick emphasized that the young defender still has a bright future ahead of him. ‘No, Leny is still just 20 years old, you know? Carrick also highlighted there isn’t a deadline for Yoro to reach the level expected of him. ‘He just needs to keep progressing in the right direction, remain eager to learn, continue improving his skills, and seize more opportunities,’ he added.
Despite his struggles at the club, Yoro managed to receive a call-up to the French under-21 national team for upcoming qualifiers against Iceland and Estonia, though he has not made the senior squad selected by Zinedine Zidane.
