SBOTOP 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32: Brazil Complete Stunning Comeback to Eliminate Japan

FIFA World Cup 2026 Result: Brazil Stage Dramatic Comeback to Eliminate Japan and Reach Round of 16

Houston, Texas – Brazil secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after a tense and dramatic 2-1 victory over Japan at the Houston Stadium on Monday (29/6/2026). The Selecao were forced to come from behind and only sealed the win in stoppage time thanks to a decisive goal from Gabriel Martinelli.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side were made to work extremely hard by a disciplined and energetic Japan team, who pushed one of the tournament favourites to their limits before eventually falling short in the dying seconds of the match.

Despite dominating possession for large periods, Brazil struggled to break down Japan’s compact defensive structure and needed moments of individual brilliance to turn the game around.

Japan Shock Brazil with First-Half Lead

As expected, Brazil started the match on the front foot, controlling possession and dictating the tempo. However, Japan showed excellent tactical discipline, staying compact and closing down spaces effectively to frustrate the South American giants.

The breakthrough surprisingly came from Japan in the 29th minute.

A quick and well-executed attacking move saw Kaishu Sano capitalise on a defensive lapse, finishing clinically to give the Samurai Blue a shock 1-0 lead. The goal stunned Brazil and shifted momentum firmly in Japan’s favour.

Brazil continued to dominate the ball but found it extremely difficult to create clear chances. Japan’s defensive organisation ensured that Carlo Ancelotti’s side went into halftime trailing despite their territorial advantage.

Casemiro Restores Balance for Selecao

In the second half, Brazil increased their intensity significantly, pressing higher and moving the ball quicker in search of an equaliser.

Their pressure finally paid off in the 56th minute.

A perfectly delivered cross from Gabriel Magalhaes found Casemiro, who powered a header past the Japanese goalkeeper to level the score at 1-1. The goal reignited Brazil’s confidence and changed the rhythm of the match entirely.

From that moment on, the Selecao pushed forward with greater urgency, while Japan relied on counter-attacks to try and regain the lead.

Martinelli Delivers Late-Game Heroics

Just when the match seemed destined for extra time, Brazil produced a decisive moment deep into stoppage time.

In the 90+5th minute, Bruno Guimaraes delivered a perfectly weighted through ball into space, allowing Gabriel Martinelli to break free behind the Japanese defence. The Arsenal winger kept his composure and finished clinically past the goalkeeper to complete a dramatic turnaround.

The late strike secured a 2-1 victory for Brazil and sparked celebrations among players and fans, as the Selecao booked their place in the Round of 16 in unforgettable fashion.

Japan Exit with Pride After Brave Performance

Although eliminated, Japan earned widespread respect for their performance. The Samurai Blue displayed excellent organisation, tactical discipline, and relentless work rate throughout the match.

At times, they frustrated Brazil’s attacking stars and nearly forced the game into extra time. Their defensive structure and quick transitions made life extremely difficult for the five-time world champions.

However, in the end, Brazil’s individual quality and depth proved decisive in the most crucial moments.

Brazil Advance, but Questions Remain

With this victory, Brazil move on to face the winner of Norway vs Ivory Coast in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

While the result ensures progression, Carlo Ancelotti will know there is still room for improvement. Brazil once again relied heavily on individual brilliance to unlock a well-organised defence, while their overall attacking efficiency remains an area of concern.

Nevertheless, the comeback win reinforces Brazil’s championship mentality. Their ability to stay composed under pressure and strike late in decisive moments continues to define them as one of the strongest contenders for the World Cup title.

With experienced leaders like Casemiro and rising stars such as Martinelli and Vinicius Jr, Brazil remain firmly in the hunt for a record-extending sixth World Cup trophy.
