The Golden State Warriors will feature a father-son duo on their bench in the upcoming 2025–2026 NBA season, as they officially announced the promotion of Nicholas Kerr, son of head coach Steve Kerr, to the team’s coaching staff.
In a press release issued on Thursday, June 19, the Warriors confirmed that Nick Kerr will join the main NBA team as an assistant coach. The 32-year-old coach will make his official NBA coaching debut this season, continuing the family legacy within one of the league’s most storied franchises.
From G League Head Coach to NBA Assistant: Nick Kerr’s Journey
Nick Kerr has steadily climbed the coaching ranks within the Warriors organization. Over the past two seasons, he served as the head coach of the Santa Cruz Warriors, the team’s G League affiliate. He began his coaching career in 2021, starting as an assistant with Santa Cruz before being promoted.
During the 2024–2025 G League season, Nick led Santa Cruz to a 20–14 win-loss record, earning fourth place in the Western Conference. Although the team’s playoff journey was cut short after a narrow 127–131 loss to the Valley Suns in the quarterfinals, his leadership was seen as a success and a sign of his readiness for a larger role.
His experience in player development, video analysis, and game strategy has made him an increasingly valuable asset to the Warriors organization.

Nick was born on November 9, 1992, in Cleveland, during Steve’s playing days with the Cavaliers. He would later follow in his father’s footsteps by entering the basketball world, though his path took a different route. Nick played college basketball at the University of San Diego and University of California, Berkeley, but opted not to pursue a professional playing career.
Instead, he transitioned to coaching, beginning as a graduate assistant with the California Golden Bears in the 2016–2017 season. He later interned with the San Antonio Spurs in 2018, gaining firsthand exposure to an elite NBA environment under Gregg Popovich.
From Video Coordinator to NBA Bench Coach
Nick’s journey with the Warriors began behind the scenes. He worked in the player development department and served as a video coordinator for three seasons — roles that allowed him to study the game in detail and understand the Warriors’ offensive and defensive systems inside out.
In 2021, he was hired as an assistant coach for Santa Cruz, quickly showcasing his potential by leading and developing young talents. His recent promotion to the main team puts him alongside top assistants like Ron Adams, Bruce Fraser, Terry Stotts, and Jerry Stackhouse, forming a well-rounded and experienced coaching group around Steve Kerr.
Warriors’ 2024–2025 Season Recap: A Short-Lived Playoff Run
The Golden State Warriors ended their 2024–25 campaign with a 48–34 regular-season record, entering the Play-In Tournament as the seventh seed in the Western Conference. However, their postseason dreams were short-lived after they were eliminated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, losing the series 4–1.
This offseason has become a period of reflection and reorganization for the franchise. The addition of Nick Kerr to the NBA bench is seen not just as a continuation of a family legacy, but as a strategic move to inject new energy and insights into the Warriors’ evolving coaching philosophy.
Looking Ahead: Nick Kerr’s Role in Warriors’ Future
As Golden State navigates a transitional period — balancing championship ambitions with the development of younger players — Nick Kerr’s promotion symbolizes a blend of continuity and innovation. With a deep understanding of the organization’s culture and a fresh coaching perspective shaped by his time in the G League and Spurs system, Nick will be expected to play a key role in shaping the next era of Warriors basketball.
The Kerr name has long been associated with basketball excellence. With Nicholas now on the NBA sidelines beside his father, that legacy looks set to continue — this time, with a new generation leading the charge.
