Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven has revealed that he personally contacted Alexander Isak after the Liverpool striker suffered a serious leg injury during last weekend’s Premier League encounter between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
The incident occurred in the first half of Liverpool’s 2–1 victory at Anfield on Saturday and quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the match. Van de Ven’s challenge on Isak resulted in the Swedish forward sustaining a fractured fibula, an injury that has since required surgery and ruled him out for an extended period.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Van de Ven stressed that there was no malicious intent behind the challenge and explained why he felt compelled to reach out to Isak shortly after the game.
“I sent him a message because I never wanted to hurt him or do something that would injure him,” Van de Ven said. “It was never my intention.”
The Incident That Changed the Match
Isak had only just entered the pitch as a substitute when the incident took place. Making an immediate impact, the 26-year-old striker found the back of the net for Liverpool, scoring moments after coming on. However, the celebration was short-lived.
As Isak struck the ball, Van de Ven attempted to block the shot. In the split-second aftermath, Isak’s leg became awkwardly trapped, leading to a heavy landing that caused severe damage to his ankle. The striker immediately went down in visible pain and required medical assistance to leave the pitch.
“I was just trying to block the shot,” Van de Ven explained. “I think it was just very unlucky how his leg landed between mine. It happened so fast.”
Medical examinations later confirmed that Isak had suffered a fractured fibula as part of a complex ankle injury. He underwent surgery on Monday, which was reported to be successful, though his recovery is expected to take around two months.
Sportsmanship Beyond the Final Whistle
Van de Ven’s decision to contact Isak was widely viewed as a gesture of sportsmanship, particularly given the intense scrutiny surrounding the incident. Liverpool head coach Arne Slot had publicly criticised the challenge earlier in the week, describing it as “dangerous” and expressing frustration over the loss of one of his key attacking options.
Despite the criticism, Van de Ven remained composed and focused on expressing empathy toward the injured player.
“I wanted to wish him all the best,” he added. “I hope to see him back on the pitch soon. He appreciated the message and replied to me, which I was glad about.”
The exchange between the two players helped to defuse tension surrounding the incident, shifting some attention away from blame and toward recovery and respect between professionals.
A Costly Setback for Alexander Isak
Isak’s injury represents another frustrating chapter in what has been a challenging period for the striker. Signed by Liverpool in the summer for a reported £125 million—a Premier League record at the time—Isak arrived with huge expectations.
Since his move from Newcastle United in September, he has scored three goals in 16 appearances across all competitions. While his adaptation period showed promise, injuries have repeatedly interrupted his momentum.
Last summer, Isak was forced to miss Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia due to a minor thigh issue, and the latest setback threatens to disrupt his rhythm once again. Nevertheless, there is optimism within Liverpool that he could still return before the end of the season.
Liverpool Face a Key Absence
The loss of Isak is undeniably a blow for Liverpool. The forward is expected to miss around two months of action, potentially sidelining him for approximately 15 matches across domestic and cup competitions.
His absence has naturally sparked speculation about Liverpool’s plans for the January transfer window. With a packed fixture list ahead, questions have arisen over whether the club might seek attacking reinforcements to compensate.
However, Arne Slot has been keen to shut down such talk, insisting that his focus remains firmly on the immediate challenges ahead rather than potential transfer activity.
Slot Keeps Focus Amid Injury Woes
Speaking ahead of upcoming home fixtures against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United, Slot made it clear that his priorities lie on the training ground and match preparation.
“The only thing I’m focused on is the next two games,” Slot said. “Two difficult matches, both at home.”
The Liverpool manager also called on his squad to show resilience and character during this testing period. With Isak sidelined, opportunities will arise for other attacking players to step up and shoulder greater responsibility.
Slot was equally vocal about the role of supporters, underlining the importance of Anfield’s atmosphere in helping the team navigate adversity.
“We need everyone—players and fans—to pull together,” he added. “Their support can make a real difference.”
Respect Amid Rivalry
While the Liverpool vs Tottenham clash will be remembered for its drama and consequences, the interaction between Van de Ven and Isak offered a reminder of the respect that exists beyond fierce rivalries.
As Isak begins his rehabilitation, messages of support from fellow professionals—including the player involved in the incident—highlight the human side of elite football.
For now, Liverpool must adapt without their star striker, while Tottenham’s Van de Ven will hope the focus returns to performances on the pitch rather than controversy. Above all, both clubs and fans alike will be wishing Isak a smooth recovery and a swift return to action.
