SBOTOP: Tang Jie and Ee Wei Remain a Strong Pairing for Malaysia

Just a few weeks ago, uncertainty loomed over the future of Malaysia top mixed doubles pair, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei. Internal tensions and a potential split had cast serious doubts on their participation in the prestigious 2025 Sudirman Cup, held this year in Xiamen, China. Many feared the duo, ranked world No. 4, would not feature in the Malaysian lineup due to the reported rift.

However, against all odds and expectations, Tang Jie and Ee Wei not only participated in the tournament—they emerged as one of Malaysia’s standout performers. Their on-court chemistry and fighting spirit were on full display as they took on the best pairs in the world, showing that their bond might have been tested, but not broken.

Malaysia Courageous Performance Against World No. 1

Their most notable showing came in a high-stakes clash against China’s world No. 1 pair, Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping. Although the Malaysian pair ultimately fell short with a score of 21-17, 21-17, the contest was far from one-sided. Tang Jie and Ee Wei pushed the top seeds hard, demonstrating resilience and tactical awareness. The tight scoreline reflected how close the match truly was.

Despite the loss, the pair drew praise for their valiant effort. The Chinese duo, who now lead their head-to-head 6-2, had to work for every point. Speaking after the match, Ee Wei acknowledged the critical difference lay in the unforced errors made on their side.

“We made more simple mistakes than they did, and that allowed them to put pressure on us throughout the match. These are the moments we need to learn from,” she said, showing maturity in defeat.

Strong Contributions to Malaysia

Before their tough battle with China, Tang Jie and Ee Wei had delivered important victories for Team Malaysia. They secured solid wins over Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa and Arisa Igarashi, as well as Australia’s Ricky Tang and Gronya Somerville. These performances helped keep Malaysia competitive in the group stages and highlighted the importance of their pairing in the national setup.

Their determination and ability to bounce back from personal and professional challenges became an inspiring narrative for Malaysian badminton fans.

The Rift That Almost Ended the Partnership

Interestingly, their impressive Sudirman Cup run almost didn’t happen. Earlier this year, disagreements between the two had reached a point where they considered going their separate ways. The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) had even taken the drastic step of temporarily splitting them up. During that period, Chen Tang Jie was paired with Chan Wen Tse, while Toh Ee Wei was partnered with Lo Bing Kun for several World Tour events.

The trial run, however, was short-lived. Within two weeks, both players made the decision to reconcile. Recognizing that their partnership still had potential and value, they chose to reunite and refocus on their shared goals.

A Partnership Renewed

Since reuniting, Tang Jie and Ee Wei have worked on rebuilding their trust and understanding on the court. Their performance in Xiamen is a testament to that progress. Though still not perfect, their improved communication and teamwork were evident throughout the tournament.

Tang Jie commented on the challenge of closing the gap against top-ranked opponents. “We tried to chase down the score in both games, but once we fell behind, it became increasingly difficult. Still, we’re growing, and each match is a lesson,” he said.

Looking Forward

As the Sudirman Cup draws to a close, Malaysia can take heart in the resilience shown by Tang Jie and Ee Wei. Their journey from near-breakup to starring in one of the sport’s premier team tournaments serves as a reminder of the importance of perseverance, unity, and mutual respect.

With their partnership seemingly back on track, Malaysian fans and BAM officials alike will be watching closely. If this duo continues to improve and iron out the flaws in their game, there’s every reason to believe they could challenge for titles in upcoming tournaments—including the Olympics.
