SBOTOP : Manchester United Linked With AS Roma Midfield Star Amid Joshua Zirkzee Transfer Speculation

Manchester United are reportedly intensifying their search for midfield reinforcements ahead of 2026, with one of Serie A’s most dynamic performers now emerging as a potential target. According to growing speculation in Italy, the player in question is said to be highly enthusiastic about a move to Old Trafford, raising intrigue over whether a deal could realistically materialise in the coming months.

As the calendar turns toward 2026, Manchester United’s priority is clear: strengthening the engine room. After an inconsistent spell in midfield across recent seasons, the club’s recruitment team is believed to be planning not just one, but two new signings to revitalise the centre of the pitch. The strategy reportedly involves a phased approach, with an initial acquisition targeted for January 2026, followed by a second addition during the summer transfer window.

The first signing is expected to deliver an immediate impact in the Premier League, ideally a player already accustomed to the physical and tactical demands of English football. However, the realities of the January market — inflated prices, limited availability, and complex negotiations — make this plan difficult to execute. If United can navigate these challenges successfully, they would then have greater flexibility to pursue an internationally established profile in the summer.

Roma Midfielder Enters the Conversation

This long-term plan provides context for the latest rumour linking United with AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone. The 24-year-old has quietly established himself as one of the most energetic and ball-progressive midfielders in Italy, attracting attention beyond Serie A.

Italian journalist Francesca Teodori, speaking on the Twitch channel “AS Roma Live,” suggested that the links between Kone and Manchester United are more than idle gossip. According to her sources, the French midfielder is expected to leave Roma in June and is keen on joining United, with speculation even hinting at a possible connection to ongoing talks involving Joshua Zirkzee.

“This isn’t new information, but it’s credible,” Teodori explained. “From what I’ve heard, Kone is set to leave Roma in June and join Manchester United. I don’t know if this is connected to the Zirkzee deal, perhaps as part of some exchange. What’s clear is that Kone is very interested in this destination, and a move in June is a real possibility.”

The Zirkzee Factor

As Teodori alluded to, Manchester United and Roma are already in discussions over a potential January move that could see Zirkzee return to Serie A. While the Dutch forward’s situation remains fluid, the existence of negotiations between the two clubs adds an intriguing layer to the Kone rumours.

Although no formal swap deal has been confirmed, the idea of interconnected transfers is not uncommon in modern football. Should Roma succeed in securing Zirkzee, it could open the door to a more amicable dialogue regarding Kone’s future, even if the midfielder’s move is ultimately scheduled for the summer.

Lessons From Inter’s Failed Attempt

If United are serious about Kone, they would be wise to study the failed pursuit by Inter Milan last summer. Reports suggested that Inter submitted a bid exceeding €40 million, only for Roma to firmly shut the door, insisting that Kone was not for sale.

Selling the midfielder to a direct Serie A rival less than a year after signing him from Borussia Mönchengladbach would have caused significant unrest among Roma supporters. That context explains the club’s hardline stance at the time. However, a transfer to a non-Italian side like Manchester United could be viewed differently, as it would avoid strengthening a domestic competitor.

Kone remains under contract at Roma until 2029, placing the Italian club in a strong negotiating position. Nevertheless, sustained interest from elite European teams could test their resolve, particularly if the financial terms are compelling.

Why Kone Fits United’s Midfield Needs

Despite not quite matching the statistical output of his previous season, Kone continues to stand out for his ball-carrying ability, physical presence, and defensive intensity. He excels at driving through midfield lines, winning duels, and maintaining tempo — qualities Manchester United have often lacked in high-pressure matches.

Roma typically operate in a 3-4-2-1 system, a structure that places heavy demands on central midfielders to cover ground and transition quickly between phases. Should United’s head coach Ruben Amorim opt to implement a similar shape — though that remains uncertain — Kone’s tactical background would allow him to adapt smoothly.

However, there are legitimate questions surrounding his end product. Kone is not known for prolific goal-scoring or high assist numbers, which has led some observers to question his valuation if Roma insist on a premium fee. His skill set aligns more closely with a box-to-box role focused on balance and control rather than attacking output.

A Transfer That Makes Sense for All Parties?

From Roma’s perspective, selling Kone abroad could be the most palatable option if they decide to cash in. From United’s side, acquiring a younger, physically robust midfielder with top-level European experience fits the club’s broader rebuild strategy.

Much will depend on timing, finances, and the outcome of the Zirkzee talks. For now, the link remains speculative, but it reflects Manchester United’s intent to be proactive rather than reactive in the transfer market.

As the summer window approaches, Kone’s situation is one to watch closely. If United follow through on their interest, Old Trafford could soon welcome a midfielder whose energy and adaptability may help redefine the club’s midfield identity for years to come.
