SBOTOP: From Small Beginnings to Grand Ambitions: The Inspiring Journey of Coach Seng Zoe

Yеоh Seng Zoe, thе newly appointed mеn’ѕ ѕіnglеѕ head соасh fоr Badminton Ireland, іѕ embracing a frеѕh сhарtеr іn his bаdmіntоn jоurnеу with determination аnd humility. At just 27 years old, the former Malaysian shuttler finds himself at the helm of a promising Irish national team, taking over a role previously held by Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, who has returned to Malaysia to coach the women’s singles squad under the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

For Seng Zoe, this appointment is both a significant honor and a major responsibility. He acknowledges the expectations that come with the role but is ready to step up and steer Ireland’s rising badminton talents to greater heights.

A Familiar Face in Irish Badminton

Seng Zoe is no stranger to the Irish badminton scene. Prior to this appointment, he was already an integral part of the national setup, serving as a sparring partner for Ireland’s top men’s singles player, Nhat Nguyen. His consistent presence and contributions gradually earned him a coaching role with the junior squad, where he impressed with his work ethic and rapport with the younger players.

His smooth transition from player to coach laid the foundation for this latest promotion. Now leading the senior national team, Seng Zoe is eager to build upon the groundwork laid by his predecessor and to foster further success both in Europe and on the international stage.

Filling Big Shoes After Iskandar’s Departure

Stepping into the shoes of Iskandar Zulkarnain, who is widely credited with transforming the Irish men’s singles team during his tenure, is no small task. Iskandar elevated Ireland’s competitiveness on the BWF World Tour and guided players to remarkable achievements in recent years.

Speaking about his promotion, Seng Zoe admitted feeling both honored and slightly surprised by the opportunity. Yet, he sees it as a challenge worth embracing.

“I started out coaching juniors, and I never expected to be given the head coach position this early,” said Seng Zoe.
“It’s a big step forward, and while it’s not going to be easy, I’m excited to learn and grow.”

With three months remaining before Iskandar officially assumes his new role in Malaysia (October 1), Seng Zoe plans to maximize the transition period by absorbing as much knowledge and insight as possible.

“I want to learn everything I can from Iskandar – not just technical coaching, but also how to manage athletes, develop their mindset, and build a winning culture,” he explained.

From Player to Coach: A Journey Built on Determination

Seng Zoe’s own path in badminton has been filled with highs and lows, making his current achievement all the more meaningful. Once considered a rising star in Malaysia, he won the national Under-18 title in 2015. However, his professional career faced numerous challenges, and in 2017, he made the bold decision to leave BAM to pursue opportunities independently.

While he didn’t reach the pinnacle as a player, his journey taught him valuable lessons that now shape his approach as a coach.

“As a player, I struggled to achieve my goals. But now, I hope to help other players fulfill their dreams,” he reflected.
“I know how hard it is, and that’s why I want to support my players – technically, mentally, and emotionally.”

His resilience, experience, and empathy are now seen as key assets in his new leadership role.

A Bright Future for Irish Badminton

With Irish badminton steadily gaining recognition in Europe and on the world stage, the appointment of Seng Zoe represents a continuity of vision and an investment in youth development. His close work with Nhat Nguyen and other junior players gives him a strong foundation, and his relationship with the team promises a seamless transition.

As Badminton Ireland prepares for the 2025 badminton season, eyes will be on Seng Zoe to see how he can guide the next generation of Irish shuttlers toward success.

“This іѕ a great opportunity, аnd I’m grateful to Bаdmіntоn Ireland fоr truѕtіng mе. I’ll give everything I have to make sure the players are well-prepared, confident, and ready to compete,” he concluded.

Final Thoughts: From Humble Beginnings to a Vision for the Future

Seng Zoe’s story is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and passion for the sport. From his modest beginnings as a junior champion in Malaysia to facing setbacks as a professional player, and now to leading a national team in Europe — his journey embodies the spirit of transformation and hope.

Aѕ he ѕtерѕ into the ѕроtlіght as Irеlаnd’ѕ men’s singles coach, Sеng Zoe іѕ not just filling a role — hе’ѕ buіldіng a legacy.
