As the 2025 summer transfer window heats up, Chelsea and Manchester United are once again locked in a fierce tug-of-war—this time for a rising star from the Bundesliga. The latest name at the center of this battle is Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, a highly rated winger currently playing for Borussia Dortmund.
While Chelsea have made the 20-year-old one of their priority signings under new manager Enzo Maresca, football pundits, including German legend Dietmar Hamann, believe that a move to Old Trafford might be the more sensible step for Gittens’ career.
Chelsea’s Aggressive Pursuit of Bynoe-Gittens
Chеlѕеа hаvе аlrеаdу mаdе their mаrk in thе trаnѕfеr mаrkеt wіth the £30 mіllіоn ѕіgnіng оf Lіаm Delap from Iрѕwісh Tоwn. But Maresca is not stopping there. The Italian tactician has set his sights on revitalizing the club’s attacking wings, and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens tops the list.
Interestingly, Gittens once passed through the Chelsea youth system before opting to continue his development in Germany. Since joining Dortmund in 2020, he has made over 100 appearances and impressed with his pace, dribbling, and attacking intelligence—especially during the first half of last season.
However, despite a dip in form towards the season’s end, Chelsea remain determined to bring him back to London. Reports suggest they have already submitted two offers, both of which were swiftly rejected by Dortmund.
Dortmund Set High Price, Chelsea Relentless
Borussia Dortmund are holding firm, placing a £50.5 million valuation on Gittens, reflecting his long-term potential and recent performances. They see no reason to sell cheaply, especially with the player still under contract.
Chelsea, however, view Gittens as a potential replacement for Jadon Sancho, who returned to Manchester United after a failed permanent transfer. The parallels between Sancho’s and Gittens’ development at Dortmund have only intensified the Blues’ interest.
Yet, internal dynamics within Dortmund may open the door for Gittens’ departure. The club’s new manager, Niko Kovač, reportedly has tactical preferences that don’t align with Gittens’ playing style.
“He played a big role, scored goals, delivered assists—but that stopped once Kovač arrived,” noted Dietmar Hamann during a recent interview.
Hamann Urges Gittens to Snub Chelsea for Man United
While many might expect Chelsea to win the race, former German international Dietmar Hamann has thrown his support behind a move to Manchester United instead.
According to Hamann, Gittens no longer fits the mold of what Kovač wants at Dortmund, describing the coach’s preference for more industrious players—something he believes Gittens is not.
“I don’t think Dortmund are in a strong position here. The manager clearly wants workhorse-type players, and Gittens isn’t that kind of winger,” said Hamann.
Hamann also expressed skepticism about Chelsea as the right destination:
“Chelsea already have a crowded squad. While Gittens is talented, he might get lost in the shuffle. At Manchester United, however, I think he could have a real impact.”
He continued:
“Gittens is still young, but he’s shown enough quality to stand out. United could use someone like him—he could be the right player at the right time.”
Manchester United’s Winger Crisis: A Perfect Fit for Gittens?
It’s no secret that Manchester United are in the midst of a winger overhaul. Wіth unсеrtаіntу ѕurrоundіng thе futurеѕ оf Mаrсuѕ Rаѕhfоrd, Jаdоn Sancho, аnd Antоnу, Unіtеd аrе асtіvеlу lооkіng fоr a frеѕh fасе tо bоlѕtеr their flanks.
Ruben Amorim, the new man at the helm of United, is reportedly seeking wingers who can offer both consistency and creativity—two qualities that Bynoe-Gittens has displayed in abundance during his time in Germany.
At just 20 years old, with significant Bundesliga experience, Gittens offers both immediate impact and long-term value. If Chelsea delay negotiations or fail to meet Dortmund’s demands, United could seize the opportunity to bring the England youth international to Old Trafford.
Chelsea or United – Where Should Gittens Go?
The decision now rests in the hands of Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. While Chelsea may offer familiarity and the promise of a homecoming, Manchester United could present a clearer pathway to regular playing time and a system better suited to his style.
As the transfer window progresses, all eyes will be on whether Gittens chooses the chaotic competition of Stamford Bridge or the potential for stardom at the Theatre of Dreams.
One thing is certain: whichever club lands him could be securing one of the brightest young wingers in Europe.
