Malaysia’s top-ranked men’s doubles duo, Aaron-Wooi Yik, showcased their mental fortitude and tactical brilliance by defeating long-time rivals Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi in a gripping match at the 2025 Singapore Open. Their hard-earned 21-18, 24-26, 21-12 victory not only marked their first win over the Japanese pair after eight consecutive losses, but also secured them a place in the tournament’s quarter-finals.
Aaron-Wooi Yik Victory Comes After Painful Sudirman Cup Loss
This win was especially meaningful given their painful defeat to the same opponents at the 2025 Sudirman Cup, where they had a match point opportunity but failed to close it out. That heartbreaking loss lingered in the minds of both players, making this triumph feel like redemption.
Following the match, the pair celebrated with visible emotion, a testament to the weight they had finally lifted. “It’s a huge relief,” said a visibly drained Soh Wooi Yik. “Everyone remembered our loss in the Sudirman Cup. This win gives us the confidence we needed.”
National Coach’s Role in the Turnaround
Head coach Herry IP played a pivotal role in preparing the duo both mentally and tactically.
“Our coach reminded us to stay calm and stick to the strategy we executed in the first game. He wanted us to enjoy the game and focus on each point,” explained Aaron Chia. “That support made a big difference. We finally broke the mental barrier.”
Aaron-Wooi Yik Clash in the Quarter-Finals
Next up, Aaron and Wooi Yik will face fellow Malaysians Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun, who advanced after defeating China’s Huang Di and Liu Yang in straight sets, 21-16, 21-16. The matchup ensures Malaysia will be represented in the semi-finals, regardless of the outcome.
Despite losing to Wei Chong-Kai Wun in the Malaysia Masters final, Aaron and Wooi Yik—who are Olympic bronze medallists and Asian champions—are now brimming with renewed confidence and focus.
“We’ll treat the next match like a high-level training session. It’s important to stay sharp and enjoy the process,” said Aaron.
Eyes Set on Singapore Open Glory
The duo’s resurgence at the Singapore Open comes after a dominant display throughout the season. Their ability to overcome psychological hurdles, combined with strategic discipline, positions them as serious contenders for the title.
If they can maintain their momentum, Aaron and Wooi Yik may be well on their way to lifting their first Singapore Open crown, adding another prestigious title to their growing legacy in international badminton.
