SBOTOP: Aaron-Wooi Yik Declare Bold Ambition to Win Titles

Malaysia’s top men’s doubles badminton pair, Aaron-Wooi Yik, are making headlines not just for their recent victories but also for their mindset: they value winning titles more than chasing the world No. 1 ranking.

While many athletes aim for the top of the BWF world rankings, Aaron and Wooi Yik believe that lifting championship trophies speaks louder than numerical positions. The pair are currently riding high after winning back-to-back titles — the 2024 Asian Championships and the Thailand Open 2024 — further solidifying their status as one of the strongest duos in men’s doubles badminton.

Winning Trophies vs. Climbing Rankings

Speaking on their priorities, Aaron Chia shared, “Yes, it’s always good to improve and climb the rankings, but for us, performance and results in tournaments matter more. If we play our best and win titles, the ranking will take care of itself.”

Aaron and Wooi Yik have experienced the highs of the global ranking race. They reached world No. 2 in January 2023 and stayed there for five months. Now, currently ranked No. 3 in the world with 83,170 points, they are just behind Denmark’s Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen (93,191 points) and fellow Malaysians Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani (91,090 points).

But to them, the satisfaction of winning titles on the BWF World Tour far outweighs temporary numerical status.

“Rankings are just numbers. What truly matters is standing on the podium with a gold medal,” said Aaron. “Titles are memories. They are proof of hard work and perseverance.”

Recent Success on the BWF World Tour

The pair had previously struggled with a title drought before finally breaking through with a win at the Denmark Open 2023. That victory was followed by a triumph at the Korea Masters, and their most recent win at the Thailand Open 2024 marked a significant milestone: three major titles in less than a year.

Their latest success reflects their consistent performance and growth as a team, and now, with momentum on their side, they are aiming to make a deep run at the 2025 Malaysian Masters, one of the key BWF tournaments of the season.

Malaysian Masters 2025: Title Hope on Home Soil

Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik advanced to the quarter-finals of the Malaysian Masters after a strong performance in the second round, where they beat Taiwan’s Liu Kuang-heng and Yang Po-han with a straight-set victory: 21-13, 21-16.

Thеіr next challenge wіll bе аgаіnѕt Dеnmаrk’ѕ Rаѕmuѕ Kjaer аnd Frеdеrіk Sogaard, whо ѕurvіvеd a tеnѕе аnd соntrоvеrѕіаl match аgаіnѕt Mаlауѕіа’ѕ Aaron Tаі аnd Kang Khai Xing (10-21, 26-24, 16-21).

With home support and rising confidence, Aaron-Wooi Yik will be looking to claim the Malaysian Masters title — a major win on home soil that could propel them further in both ranking and reputation.

The Bigger Picture: Paris 2024 Olympics and Beyond

Looking ahead, their focus remains sharp. As the Paris 2024 Olympics approach, every tournament counts. But for Aaron and Wooi Yik, the goal remains unchanged: to win major badminton titles, not just chase the world No. 1 ranking.

Their approach sends a strong message: success in badminton isn’t just about rankings — it’s about winning when it matters most. And with their current form, the Malaysian pair is becoming a serious contender in every tournament they enter.
