Inter Milan head coach Cristian Chivu is expressing deep concern regarding his team’s troubling record in the UEFA Champions League. After suffering another defeat in the 2026/2027 season, the situation has escalated to a critical level for the Nerazzurri.
On October 14, 2026, Inter lost an intense match against Club Brugge at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, finishing with a score of 3-4. The match was a goal fest, highlighting numerous scoring opportunities from both sides. Although Inter managed to score three times, including two goals from Lautaro Martinez and another from Ange-Yoan Bonny, it wasn’t enough to turn the tide in their favor.
This latest result adds to the team’s woes following a disappointing 1-2 loss to Real Madrid in their opening match of the group stage. Consequently, Inter finds themselves with two defeats in their first two matches, significantly shrinking their chances of advancing directly to the knockout stage.
Chivu Analyzes the Key Failures Against Club Brugge
Reflecting on the game, Chivu noted that his players started off well, demonstrating a high level of intensity. However, tactical errors following a corner kick allowed Brugge to capitalize on a counterattack, leading to an early setback for the home side. Despite equalizing before halftime, Inter missed several key opportunities in the second half. This failure resulted in mounting frustration which caused the players to lose their composure and deviate from their game plan.
“The first half was indeed promising for both teams, featuring high intensity. However, we conceded a goal due to a counterattack stemming from our own corner, which should have been better organized,” Chivu explained in a post-match interview with Sky Sport Italia. “After equalizing, we started the second half strong, yet wasted significant chances to score. This led to a rush of play where we lost balance. Once the score shifted to 1-2, everything turned in a negative direction for us.”
Chivu further acknowledged the need for Inter to remain calm and focused on their gameplay strategy. He also credited Club Brugge for their strong technical skills, intensity, and determination, which posed significant challenges to Inter throughout the match.
Addressing Defensive Concerns and Future Strategies
The issues plaguing Inter are not confined to just this single match against Brugge. Despite scoring three goals, the team has conceded a staggering 14 goals across eight matches in all competitions this season, which includes both Serie A and the Champions League. Chivu highlighted this alarming trend and called for immediate corrective actions. He emphasized the importance of enhancing balance in gameplay, improving dueling quality, better understanding second balls, and fortifying defensive organization to avoid losing control in key moments.
“It would be disingenuous to say I am not worried about the current situation. There are definitely aspects that require thorough evaluation,”
Chivu remarked. “While improving our standing in the Champions League presents its own set of challenges due to the quality of our opponents, we must remain dedicated to achieving balance, improving in duels, addressing second balls, and maintaining our game shape.”
Furthermore, the defeat against Club Brugge means Inter has now lost four consecutive matches in Champions League competition, including two losses in the previous season’s playoffs against Bodo/Glimt. Out of their last eight games, they have conceded defeat in seven, worrying Chivu greatly about their preparedness to face European competitors.
Chivu is committed to revising his preparation strategy to set a different tone for upcoming matches. He is also willing to shoulder responsibility for not being able to secure the balance necessary for the team’s success while urging his players to retain their belief, as there are still six matches left in the group stage.
“We are fully aware of what is going wrong in the Champions League and are determined to adjust our mental preparation. I must clarify that we have to improve our equilibrium as we approach these European fixtures,” he concluded. This introspection comes at a vital time for Inter, where adjustments are not just recommended but essential for their survival in this prestigious competition.
