Real Madrid is reportedly initiating discussions to potentially acquire Scott McTominay from Napoli. According to various Italian media sources, the prestigious Spanish club has reached out to the representatives of the Scottish international midfielder to gather insights about his future.
Since leaving Manchester United and joining Napoli in the summer of 2024, McTominay has been making a significant impact. His performances have prompted the Italian club to consider securing him with a long-term contract. However, negotiations regarding an extension have yet to reach a conclusion. This current uncertainty presents Real Madrid with an opportunity to investigate the possibility of transferring McTominay, even as multiple Premier League clubs express interest in bringing him back to England.
Contract Negotiations at Napoli Yet to Conclude
Scott McTominay is currently in the third year of a four-year contract with Napoli. Reports suggest that the club made efforts last August to extend his contract until 2030, with an additional one-year option. As reported by Il Mattino, the ongoing stalemate in negotiations has led Real Madrid to delicately probe the midfielder’s situation through his representatives. Although an official bid has not yet been made, this move indicates that the Spanish club holds a keen interest in McTominay’s current predicament.
Meanwhile, discussions surrounding McTominay’s potential return to England gained traction during the previous summer transfer window, as several Premier League teams expressed their intentions to engage in competition for his signature.
Possible Reunion with Jose Mourinho
The chance to transfer to Real Madrid might also pave the way for McTominay to reunite with Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese manager was pivotal in McTominay’s early career, having handed him his debut at Manchester United during the 2016/2017 season. Mourinho has affectionately referred to McTominay as one of his ‘favorite players’, highlighting the bond they share.
While discussing players he has enjoyed managing, Mourinho famously stated, “He is my son. Whenever I move from one club to another, I always find my sons. They will always be my sons.” This admiration was further exemplified in 2018 when Mourinho awarded McTominay the Manager’s Player of the Year for his exceptional performance throughout the season.
Despite no longer collaborating professionally, McTominay has maintained communication with Mourinho. In a candid discussion on the High Performance Podcast, McTominay reminisced about the emotional moment when Mourinho departed Manchester United, stating, “This man means so much to me and has given me all the dreams I could have wished for. When he left, I didn’t know what to think.” He also shared that they still occasionally connect, as Mourinho sends text messages to commend his on-field performances.
The interest from Real Madrid has undoubtedly intensified the uncertainty surrounding McTominay’s future. As long as Napoli struggles to finalize a new contract and no formal offers emerge, any potential transfer remains speculative.
