SBOTOP: Three Strategies for Mourinho to Restore Real Madrid’s Championship Aspirations

Real Madrid has had a rocky start to their season, failing to meet expectations since Jose Mourinho’s reappointment as head coach. Following a significant investment in summer transfers, the team is still grappling with consistency and cohesion in their gameplay. Currently sitting in third place in La Liga after eight matches, Real Madrid desperately needs to recalibrate their strategies to secure silverware, having gone two consecutive seasons without winning any trophies. Mourinho must quickly devise new tactics to revitalize the squad.

1. Resting Vinicius Junior for a Fresh Perspective

Vinicius Junior has become a liability in the attack, with the Brazilian talisman only netting a single goal across eight outings. His performance this season pales in comparison to his exceptional form from 2021 to 2024. In addition, he has missed several clear-cut chances and hasn’t shown the sharpness he possessed in the past, indicating a dip in his confidence levels, especially when facing defenders.

Mourinho should explore alternatives such as Brahim Diaz, Yan Diomande, Carlos Espi, Endrick, and Rodrygo, who will soon return from injury. Taking Vinicius out of the starting lineup could not only give him the opportunity to regain his form but also allow other players to step into the spotlight and shine. Kylian Mbappe has proven to be a potent goal-scoring threat for Madrid, but relying solely on one player can be detrimental. Therefore, rotation in the attacking line is a strategy worth considering.

2. Elevating Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Role Amidst Injury Concerns

Initially, Trent Alexander-Arnold was touted as the future right-back for Real Madrid. However, injuries and the arrival of Denzel Dumfries have stunted his progress. Dumfries, since his signing, has failed to make a significant impact on the pitch. This presents an opportunity for Mourinho to provide more exposure to Trent, whose long-range passing skills could add much-needed variety to Madrid’s offense.

With the departures of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, the need for a player who can effectively orchestrate play from the back is crucial. Trent’s impressive performances with the England national team during international breaks provide an encouraging sign for Mourinho. If he can sustain that level of play, a return to a more prominent position on the field could be achieved for Alexander-Arnold.

3. Revamping the Midfield Composition

The midfield has emerged as one of the pressing issues for Madrid, particularly following the exits of Modric and Kroos. The team struggles with maintaining control over matches and generating consistent offensive opportunities from the center of the pitch. While Madrid has made efforts to bring in additional midfielders, the only addition has been Bernardo Silva on a free transfer, leaving Mourinho with limited options to explore.

Currently, the coach has experimented with a dynamic duo of Valverde and Bernardo Silva, as well as Valverde alongside Tchouameni. Unfortunately, neither duo has achieved the equilibrium that Madrid desperately needs. Therefore, Mourinho could potentially benefit by trying a setup combining Bernardo Silva with Tchouameni, thereby omitting Valverde to strike a new balance.

This change, albeit risky, might provide the fresh perspective that Madrid’s midfield needs. Finding the right blend of players in the attacking line, right-back position, and midfield could significantly enhance Los Blancos’ chances of returning to a competitive state for the title.

In conclusion, given the early season struggles, it is crucial for Mourinho to think outside the box and implement these three changes. By rotating players effectively, tweaking formations, and ensuring that fresh talent is utilized wisely, there is a brighter path ahead for Real Madrid.
