Argentina could be facing disciplinary action from FIFA after the world football governing body launched a comprehensive investigation into several incidents that occurred during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The inquiry reportedly covers the conduct of players, coaching staff, and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) following multiple alleged breaches of FIFA regulations.
The investigation comes as a surprise, arriving only days after leaked correspondence suggested FIFA President Gianni Infantino had praised Argentina for its professionalism throughout the tournament. Despite those earlier reports, FIFA has now initiated formal disciplinary proceedings and is allowing all parties involved the opportunity to present their explanations before a final ruling is issued.
The case includes several allegations, ranging from the display of a politically charged banner to clashes during the World Cup final, as well as possible violations of match-day protocols. If any of the accusations are upheld, Argentina could face fines, player suspensions, and additional disciplinary measures.
Political Banner Becomes a Central Focus of FIFA Investigation
One of the key issues under review is the banner displayed by several Argentina players after their victory over England in the World Cup semifinal.
The banner reportedly carried the message “Las Malvinas son Argentinas“ (“The Malvinas are Argentine”), referring to the Falkland Islands, a territory that remains the subject of a long-standing sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.
FIFA regulations prohibit teams and players from using official competitions to promote political, ideological, or non-football-related messages. Because of this policy, the banner has become one of the primary elements in the governing body’s investigation.
This is not the first time the AFA has faced disciplinary scrutiny over a similar matter. In 2014, the federation received a fine of 30,000 Swiss francs after players displayed a comparable political message ahead of an international friendly against Slovenia.
Although the banner shown during the 2026 World Cup was reportedly smaller and carried by only a handful of players—including Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martínez, and Giovani Lo Celso—FIFA could still impose sanctions on the individuals involved if it concludes that its regulations were violated.
World Cup Final Clashes Could Lead to Player Suspensions
Separate from the political banner case, FIFA is also investigating a series of confrontations that occurred during the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final.
Midfielder Leandro Paredes is reportedly facing three separate allegations related to violent conduct after becoming involved in heated altercations with Spain players Eric García and Gavi during the match.
Defender Nahuel Molina has also been cited in the disciplinary review, with accusations including two counts of violent conduct and one allegation of unsporting behavior.
In addition, assistant coach Roberto Ayala and midfielder Thiago Almada are among those reportedly included in FIFA’s investigation as officials examine the events surrounding the final.
Under the FIFA Disciplinary Code, players found guilty of violent conduct can receive suspensions of at least three matches, with longer bans possible depending on the severity of the offense.
Argentine Football Association Also Under Investigation
The disciplinary process extends beyond individual players and coaching staff.
FIFA is reportedly reviewing several administrative issues involving the Argentine Football Association, including supporter behavior, delayed kick-offs, and alleged failures to comply with competition and security protocols during the tournament.
Historically, similar offenses have often resulted in financial penalties. However, if supporter-related violations are deemed particularly serious, FIFA regulations also allow for stricter punishments, including partial or full stadium closures for future international fixtures.
The governing body is expected to announce its final verdict only after every individual and organization involved has completed the formal defense process.
Argentina Await FIFA’s Final Decision
At this stage, no sanctions have been officially imposed, and Argentina has been given the opportunity to respond to every allegation before FIFA reaches a conclusion.
The outcome of the investigation could have significant consequences for both the national team and the Argentine Football Association, particularly if multiple violations are confirmed.
With several high-profile incidents now under review, attention will remain firmly on FIFA’s disciplinary committee as it determines whether Argentina’s World Cup campaign will ultimately be remembered not only for its performances on the pitch but also for the legal and regulatory challenges that followed.
