SBOTOP Bruno Fernandes Frustrated After Portugal’s World Cup 2026 Exit: “We Could Have Done More”

Bruno Fernandes has expressed his disappointment after Portugal’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign came to an end following a narrow 0-1 defeat against Spain in the Round of 16.

The Manchester United midfielder admitted that Portugal failed to achieve the objective they had set before the tournament began. Despite showing strong performances throughout the competition, Fernandes believes the team should have progressed further given the quality within the squad.

Portugal entered the knockout stage with major ambitions. With a talented generation of players and one of the deepest squads in international football, Selecao das Quinas were expected to challenge for the World Cup trophy.

However, their journey ended in heartbreaking fashion at the Round of 16 stage.

Late Mikel Merino Goal Sends Portugal Home

Portugal faced Spain in a highly anticipated clash at the Round of 16, with both teams fighting for a place in the World Cup 2026 quarter-finals.

The match was fiercely contested from the opening whistle. Both sides displayed tactical discipline, with neither team willing to take unnecessary risks.

For most of the game, Portugal and Spain cancelled each other out. The score remained locked at 0-0 deep into the final minutes, and many expected the match to continue into extra time or even a penalty shootout.

However, Spain found the decisive moment when substitute Mikel Merino scored during injury time. His late strike secured a dramatic 1-0 victory for La Roja and ended Portugal’s hopes of continuing their World Cup journey.

For Fernandes and his teammates, the defeat was especially painful because it arrived just moments before the possibility of extra time.

Bruno Fernandes Calls Portugal’s Exit Disappointing

Speaking after the match, Bruno Fernandes did not hide his frustration. The midfielder admitted that Portugal’s elimination in the Round of 16 was not the result the team wanted.

According to Fernandes, Portugal had arrived at the tournament with much bigger ambitions and believed they had the ability to compete for the biggest prize in international football.

“I don’t think we can say this was a successful campaign. We should have gone further. This is a very disappointing moment,” Fernandes said.

The Manchester United star emphasized that Portugal’s main objective from the beginning was clear: winning the World Cup.

“We came here with a very clear goal, which was to win the World Cup.”

Fernandes’ comments reflected the disappointment inside the Portugal camp, as many believed this squad had enough talent and experience to make a deep run in the tournament.

Portugal Lost Against One of the Best Teams

Despite the disappointing result, Fernandes acknowledged that Spain deserved respect for their performance.

The Portuguese midfielder admitted that his team started the match well, especially during the first half. However, he felt Portugal became too passive after halftime and allowed Spain to control more possession.

“We played well in the first half. But after the break, we defended too much and allowed our opponents to have much more control of the ball.”

Spain gradually increased their pressure and eventually found the breakthrough through Merino’s late goal.

Fernandes also accepted that Portugal’s elimination came against one of the strongest teams in the competition. He recognized Spain’s quality and their status as one of the leading candidates to lift the World Cup trophy.

“We lost against one of the title contenders and one of the teams considered favorites to become champions,” he added.

Portugal’s Golden Generation Faces Reflection

The early elimination represents a missed opportunity for Portugal’s current generation of players.

With experienced stars and emerging talents combined in one squad, expectations were extremely high before the tournament. Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and other top-level names were expected to lead Portugal toward another historic achievement.

However, their World Cup journey ended sooner than many predicted.

The result also adds another emotional chapter to Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career, as the tournament was expected to be his final World Cup appearance with Portugal.

Fernandes Returns Focus to Manchester United

Following Portugal’s elimination, Bruno Fernandes and the rest of the squad will now take a short break before returning to club football preparations.

Fernandes is scheduled to return to Manchester United in early August to begin preparations for the upcoming season, including the club’s pre-season program.

After a disappointing World Cup ending, the midfielder will now shift his attention toward helping Manchester United achieve their goals in the new campaign.

For Portugal, the focus will turn toward rebuilding and preparing for the next chapter. While the World Cup dream ended earlier than expected, the team still possesses the quality and ambition to compete at the highest level in future tournaments.
