SBOTOP : Manchester City Urged to Sign N’Golo Kanté to Strengthen Midfield Depth

Manchester City have been advised to make a decisive move in the upcoming January 2026 transfer window as the Premier League title race reaches a critical phase. With the margins at the top of the table increasingly fine, former Premier League striker Dean Saunders believes City should seriously consider signing experienced midfielder N’Golo Kanté to strengthen their championship credentials.

Saunders argues that the acquisition of Kanté would not only boost City’s midfield but also serve as a powerful statement of intent in a season where momentum could shift rapidly. His comments arrive at a time when Arsenal hold a narrow advantage at the summit of the table, having finished the Christmas period at the top — traditionally seen as a significant marker in the title race.

Arsenal’s Lead Comes With Historical Warnings

While Arsenal ended Christmas Day as league leaders, history offers little comfort to Mikel Arteta’s side. On four previous occasions, the Gunners have been top of the table on 25 December, yet none of those campaigns concluded with them lifting the Premier League trophy.

Earlier in the season, Arsenal appeared to be pulling away from the chasing pack, displaying consistency and control. However, a recent dip in form has reopened the contest, allowing both Manchester City and Aston Villa to close the gap. City, in particular, have quietly rebuilt momentum.

Pep Guardiola’s side now trail Arsenal by just two points. Both teams have recorded 12 league victories, but City boast a superior goal difference, having scored ten more goals than their title rivals — a statistic that underlines their attacking efficiency and latent threat.

Kanté Tipped as a January Difference-Maker

Speaking on The Sports Breakfast, Saunders was asked to assess how the January transfer window could reshape the title picture. He was unequivocal in his belief that Kanté, currently playing for Al Ittihad, could dramatically alter the balance of power.

“This could be the signing of the season,” Saunders said. “It would be a huge statement. In my opinion, Kanté is available.”

The former Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forest forward suggested that Kanté’s time in Saudi Arabia may have reached a natural pause, potentially opening the door for a return to elite European football.

“He’s been there long enough, there are things like tax residency to consider, but I think he’s available. He could play for any team in the world,” Saunders added.

Why Kanté Still Fits the Elite Level

Despite being 34 years old, Kanté continues to command immense respect across the game. Saunders highlighted the Frenchman’s tactical intelligence and defensive instincts as qualities that age has not diminished.

“In that role, he thinks like a defender and covers so much ground,” he explained. “He’s 34 — but he should still be able to get around the pitch. He hasn’t lost his pace, and his attitude is exceptional.”

Kanté’s understanding of space, anticipation, and ball recovery made him one of the most influential midfielders of his generation. Even in a more controlled role, his presence can elevate those around him — a factor that Guardiola values highly.

A Natural Fit for Manchester City?

According to Saunders, Manchester City represent the ideal environment for a short-term Kanté deal. He suggested a pragmatic approach, proposing a one-year contract to minimise risk while maximising impact.

“He could play right in the middle of Manchester City’s midfield,” Saunders said. “Give him a one-year deal. Bring him in as insurance if his legs aren’t quite what they used to be. In that position, you don’t have to run as much.”

With City’s emphasis on positional discipline and ball control, Kanté would not be required to cover excessive distances. Instead, his role would focus on breaking up play, protecting the defence, and allowing City’s creative talents to flourish.

Saunders went even further, claiming that Kanté would still improve almost any side in the league. “He would fit into any Premier League team right now,” he stated.

Why Arsenal May Not Need Him

Interestingly, Saunders does not believe Arsenal are the club most in need of Kanté’s services. He pointed to the presence of Martin Zubimendi and the versatility of Declan Rice as reasons why Arteta’s squad is already well-covered in defensive midfield areas.

However, his verdict on the rest of the league was emphatic. “For every other team in this league, I’d sign him tomorrow,” Saunders said. “He might be the best in that position since Claude Makelele — apart from Rodri, of course.”

Kanté’s Legacy and Motivation

Kanté left Chelsea on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 to join the Saudi Pro League. His career honours include two Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the Europa League — achievements that underline his pedigree at the highest level.

Internationally, he was a cornerstone of France’s World Cup-winning side in 2018 and remains motivated by the prospect of earning a place in Les Bleus’ squad for the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

A return to the Premier League with Manchester City could serve as the perfect platform to reignite that ambition — and, in the process, potentially tip the balance in one of the tightest title races in recent memory.
