Malaysia’s junior badminton circuit is entering a new era according to coach Hoon. Following the departure of one of its most promising pairs. Aаrоn and Khаі Xіng, thе dуnаmіс duо whо сlіnсhеd the boys’ dоublеѕ crown аt thе 2023 BWF World Junior Chаmріоnѕhірѕ, have оffісіаllу mаdе thе lеар to thе ѕеnіоr nаtіоnаl tеаm — leaving big shoes to fill іn thе junior rаnkѕ.
Their promotion is a milestone for the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), but it also poses a fresh challenge: rebuilding the junior doubles squad with players who have had less time to grow within the national program.
Coach Hoon Faces a Tough Rebuilding Task
Junior doubles coach Hoon Thien How, himself a former elite doubles player, admitted the transition period will not be without its growing pains. Unlike Aaron and Khai Xing, who joined BAM at just 13 years old and had years of development under the national setup, the current crop of juniors are coming into the program relatively late.
“Aaron and Khai Xing were integrated into the BAM structure from a young age. That allowed them to absorb our training philosophy, build strong foundations, and adapt early to the demands of international-level competition,” said Thien How.
“Most of our current juniors entered BAM only last year, and many are already around 17. They come in from various state-level programs with different playing styles and technical levels. So we have to start by reworking their fundamentals, tactics, and court chemistry.”
Hoon Shuffling the Deck: New Pairings and Fresh Starts
In light of recent underwhelming results in a series of junior tournaments, Thien How and his coaching team have decided to overhaul the doubles pairings. The aim is to discover combinations with stronger chemistry and greater potential — particularly ahead of the crucial Asian Junior Championships scheduled for July.
“We identified a gap between our current players and those from powerhouse nations like China, South Korea, and Japan,” Thien How acknowledged. “If we want to compete at their level, we need to adapt and innovate — and that starts with finding the right pairings.”
Among the new doubles combinations being tested are:
- Datu Anif Isaac & Damien Ling
- Isyraf Hafizin & Ungku Mohamed Ungku Ameer
- Mohd Shazmir Irfan & Pang Khai Zhe
These pairs are part of a fresh strategy to strengthen Malaysia’s junior doubles landscape. And the coaching team is closely monitoring their progress both in training and competition.
Spotlight on Anif: A Rising Talent With Dual Duties
Onе рlауеr attracting раrtісulаr attention іѕ 17-уеаr-оld Dаtu Anіf Iѕаас. Whо has аlrеаdу mаdе waves in thе mixed dоublеѕ еvеnt аlоngѕіdе Dania Sоfеа Zаіdі. The раіr rеасhеd thе fіnаlѕ оf the Dutсh Junior Intеrnаtіоnаl іn Mаrсh, signaling Anіf’ѕ potential оn thе іntеrnаtіоnаl stage.
Coach Hoon believes that Anif’s ability to read the game. Combined with his tactical awareness and versatility, could translate well into the boys’ doubles discipline too.
“I saw Anif’s performance in the Dutch Junior and was impressed by his composure and court craft,” Thien How explained. “He’s naturally suited to the backcourt, and we’re hoping Damien — who’s also 17 and just joined BAM last year — can complement him with his strength at the net.”
So far, the early signs are positive. “They’ve shown good understanding during training. Now we need to see how they perform in actual matches.”
Proving Grounds: National U-18 Championships
Anif and Damien have been seeded top in the upcoming Under-18 National Championships. This will be their first real test as a new pairing. They’ll be aiming to justify the faith shown in them by the coaching staff. And perhaps emerge as the next breakout duo in Malaysian badminton.
They’ll be joined in the tournament by their fellow new pairs. Isyraf-Ungku Mohamed and Shazmir-Khai Zhe, as BAM intensifies its search for the next Aaron and Khai Xing.
While the road ahead may be challenging, Hoon remains optimistic.
“Transitions like these are never easy, but they’re also opportunities,” he said. “Wе’rе lауіng thе fоundаtіоn fоr the next generation оf сhаmріоnѕ. With hard work, chemistry, and the right mindset, any of these pairs could follow in Aaron and Khai Xing’s footsteps — or even surpass them.”
As the junior team reshapes and the new partnerships take form. Malaysian badminton fans can look forward to discovering the next stars-in-the-making — ones who might one day conquer the global stage just as Aaron and Khai Xing once did.
