For Malaysian men’s doubles pair Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun, Istora Senayan in Jakarta is quickly becoming more than just a competition venue — it’s starting to feel like a second home. The electrifying atmosphere and familiar court seem to bring out the best in the world No. 7 pair, who are now on the brink of reaching their third straight final at this iconic arena.
This Jakarta venue has already witnessed two impressive performances from the pair in the past year. Wei Chong and Kai Wun finished as runners-up in the prestigious Super 1000 tournament in 2024, and followed that up with a triumphant campaign earlier this year when they clinched the Indonesia Masters Super 500 title — all played at Istora Senayan.
Now, in the ongoing tournament, they’ve added another spectacular chapter to their growing love story with the venue. On Friday, the Malaysian duo pulled off a major upset, defeating India’s world No. 22 pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, in straight sets, 21-19, 21-16. The win, achieved in just 43 minutes, was particularly significant as it marked their first-ever victory over the Indian pair in five head-to-head encounters.
Tactical Precision Leads to Breakthrough Win
Speaking after the match, Wei Chong credited their strategy and composure for the breakthrough performance.
“We stayed committed to our game plan even though they are known for their speed and power,” said Wei Chong.
“The draught in the stadium made it tricky, so we tried to keep the shuttle flat and avoided lifting too often. That gave us better control throughout the match.”
Kаі Wun есhоеd thе sentiment, еmрhаѕіzіng the mеntаl аnd еmоtіоnаl lift thаt соmеѕ from fіnаllу bеаtіng a formidable rіvаl.
“It feels really good to get that win against them,” said Kai Wun. “It’s a huge confidence boost heading into the semi-finals. So far, everything is going according to plan and we’re feeling very positive.”

“We were a bit nervous in those critical points, and they managed their emotions better,” admitted Izzuddin in a post-match interview.
Despite the heartbreak, Sze Fei remained optimistic and refuted claims that their world No. 1 ranking had burdened them with additional pressure.
“There’s always pressure at this level, but it’s all about learning how to manage it. That’s an area we need to work on,” he said.
Malaysian Presence Remains Strong in Jakarta’s Istora Senayan
Evеn wіth Szе Fеі and Izzuddin bowing out, Malaysia ѕtіll mаіntаіnѕ a ѕtrоng рrеѕеnсе іn the ѕеmі-fіnаlѕ. Aраrt from Wei Chong аnd Kai Wun, thе country will bе rерrеѕеntеd bу Pеаrlу Tаn аnd M. Thіnааh іn wоmеn’ѕ doubles, аѕ well аѕ Chеn Tang Jіе and Tоh Eе Wei in mixed dоublеѕ.
