SBOTOP: Slot Admits Liverpool Eased Off in Second Half, Letting Arsenal Snatch a Draw

Liverpool manager Arne Slot provided an honest and open reflection following his team’s failure to secure a win against Arsenal at Anfield. Slot didn’t shy away from admitting that his side’s performance dropped significantly after the break, which allowed the visitors to claw their way back into the contest.

The high-stakes Premier League encounter, which took place as part of matchweek 36, saw Liverpool host Arsenal in what turned out to be a thrilling and fiercely competitive game. The Reds appeared to be in firm control during the first half, establishing a commanding 2-0 lead over the North London side. However, the match took a dramatic turn in the second half, as Arsenal staged a determined comeback, leveling the score at 2-2.

Slot, reflecting on the match, acknowledged that his team failed to maintain their rhythm and intensity after halftime—a lapse that proved costly against a side of Arsenal’s caliber.

“It’s quite frustrating, to be honest. For about 15 to 20 minutes in the second half, we struggled to impose the same level of intensity and sharpness that we had earlier in the game,” Slot told Liverpool’s official website in his post-match interview.

A Tale of Two Halves

The Dutch tactician admitted that while Liverpool performed well during the opening 45 minutes, their overall display deteriorated after the break, allowing the Gunners to gain the upper hand.

“Our first-half performance was, in many aspects, very solid,” Slot elaborated. “We created good opportunities, controlled the flow of the game, and pressed effectively. But I have to say, it was a similar story to last week—we enjoyed plenty of possession and got ourselves into dangerous positions, but our decision-making and execution in the final third were not as clinical as they needed to be.”

Slot didn’t stop there. He also pointed out his side’s defensive frailties after the break, admitting that Liverpool’s organization and resilience at the back were lacking during crucial phases of the match.

“We can’t ignore the fact that our defensive structure, particularly in the opening stages of the second half, was below our usual standards. That gave Arsenal the encouragement they needed to get back into the game,” Slot added to SBOTOP Online. “While we showed moments of quality throughout the match, the way we allowed them to dictate play during that spell was concerning.”

A Match Worthy of the Premier League Stage

Despite his disappointment with the result, Slot emphasized that the match served as an excellent showcase for what makes the Premier League one of the most exciting and competitive leagues in the world.

“I think matches like this are why people around the globe love the Premier League so much,” said Slot with a smile. “Two teams giving their all, pushing each other to the limit, and creating an atmosphere filled with drama and excitement from the first whistle to the last.”

“We saw four goals, end-to-end action, and moments where either side could have taken all three points. That’s the essence of this league—it’s never over until the final whistle. That’s also why we strive to give everything in every match, to entertain the fans and fight for victories.”

Slot Focus Shifts to the Next Challenge

Slot and his Liverpool squad will now quickly shift their focus to the next assignment. The Reds are scheduled to face Brighton on May 20, 2025, in what is expected to be another challenging away fixture.

With only two games remaining in the Premier League campaign, Slot emphasized the importance of learning from their recent lapses and finishing the season on a strong note.

“We need to regroup, analyze where we fell short today, and approach the next match with renewed energy and focus,” Slot concluded. “There’s still plenty to play for, and our ambition remains to finish the season in the best possible way.”
